Director's message

Supporting our greater community is core to BankVic’s ‘Banking withHeart’ philosophy and this is something that also aligns closely with ourteam members in their everyday life.

BankVic has been pleased to support a number of community events such as the Dandelion Wishes Gala (to raise funds for the Monash Children’sHospital), the Spirit of CFA (Country Fire Authority) Awards, the 2018 Victoria Police & Emergency Services Games, the Luke Batty Memorial Shield event and the 2018 Ballarat Health Services Charity Golf Day. There are a number of exciting community events to get involved with in the coming months, so come along to one and don’t hesitate to say hellowhen you see us in our BankVic shirts.

We were also thrilled to bring real-time payments to our members with the successful launch of the New Payments Platform (NPP) in February. The response has been terrific with many of our members creating PayIDs and transacting in near real-time. To get started, simply set-up your PayID in internet banking, or the mobile app.

We are also continually working on enhancing our digital banking services for our members and will share updates throughout the year, so stay tuned. As always we welcome your valuable feedback in helping shape the future of BankVic.

Debra Robertson

MEET DEBRA ROBERTSON

We were lucky to sit down with our newest board member,Debra Robertson, to get an insight into a very busy day in her life.

Q1. YOU HAVE HAD AN AMAZING CAREER, INCLUDING BEING A RECIPIENT OF THE AUSTRALIAN POLICE MEDAL. WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU?

I can’t believe it’s been 34 years (and counting) and I have been fortunate enough to have had such a diverse career. The ability to continue to learn and grow no matter what rank or role has been the main highlight for me.

Q2. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A BANKVIC BOARD MEMBER?

I have been a member of BankVic since I joined VicPol and it has never disappointed me, in fact I have always been comforted by the growth and innovation in the business. For me it was time to be more of a part of that and contribute in away that will see the business flourish for all members.

Q3. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO JOIN THE POLICEFORCE?

Know yourself first, recognise the challenges you might face and most importantly be prepared for changes in your life.It is a career that can and will give you great satisfaction;sometimes it is important to remind yourself why you do it.

Q4. YOU’VE WORKED IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT AREAS WITHIN THE POLICE FORCE. HOW HAVE YOUR RESPECTIVE ROLES BEEN DIFFERENT? WHICH HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE?

My most satisfying role has been as a detective. My family loved telling me I was a paid ‘sticky beak’. It was very rewarding to give people closure to a crime that had negatively impacted their life for a long time. Other roles and duties just allowed me to build on these skills and remind me of how grateful I am to be doing police work.

Q5. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR SPARE TIME?

I am a bit of a textile nut, love sewing and creating things. I am sure this has helped me manage my mental health throughout my career. I am also a crazy Carlton supporter, going to every game. I think this year is the one!!! (I say that every year).

Q6. DO YOU HAVE A QUOTE OR MOTTO THATYOU LIVE YOUR LIFE BY?

Never be regretful. Fear is temporary but regret is forever.

Q7. DO YOU HAVE A ROLE MODEL THAT YOU LOOK UP TO?

My beautiful mum. She passed away just recently but shehad a way of simplifying things and truly never had a bad word to say about anyone.

Q8. WHAT’S ON YOUR RADAR FOR 2018?

I have been so fortunate to be awarded a Churchill fellowship for 2018 so I will be heading to Europe in August to research cultural management change. My focus is on the post Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) environment and I will look at other organisations and institutions hopefully outside of ‘blueshirt’ thinking. The other big event in my family’s life isthat my eldest son is getting married, so we are all looking forward to celebrating his wedding.

HOW TO MAKE ATRAVEL INSURANCE CLAIM

Travelling soon? With all the excitement of planning and going on a holiday, it is also important to be prepared to handle travelling risks – these can include anything from lost and stolen luggage, to flight delays and cancellations,to medical emergencies and evacuations. A good insurance policy can help you handle these travel hurdles and make your trip an enjoyable and stress-free one. Make sure you know what to do with these simple tips.

KNOWING YOUR RISKS IS IMPORTANT

• Injury or medical issues

• Dental issues

• Delayed and rescheduled flights

• Lost or stolen luggage

• Cancelled flights

• Theft of belongings

• Death or disability

• Terrorism, natural disasters and political unrest

Check the Smart Traveller website smartraveller.gov.au for extra advice about your specific destination too.

BEFORE YOU GO

Read your policy and get to know your cover. If you’re planning on doing anything extreme or going off the beaten track, let your insurer know and check if you’ll be covered. Keep your policy number and your associated emergency numbers in a safe and easy to find location in case youneed them. Taking photos of your documents before you head off helps.

MAKING A CLAIM WHILST YOU’RE AWAY

You should simply be able to call your insurer whilst you’re away to lodge a claim on their hotline. Have your policy number handy, the name the policy is under, and the details of the incident. It’s also a good idea to take photo evidence, keep your policy reports, and record any medical information associated with the event.
